Bruker A590 infrared microscope

Contact: Joerg Hermann@anu.edu.au Tel: +61 2 6125 8842

The Earth Materials group operates a Bruker IFS28 infrared spectrometer equipped with a Bruker A590 infrared microscope. The instrument can be used to acquire spectra from both powdered samples dispersed in KBr and individual free-standing mineral grains. Spectra can be recorded from 600 - 6000 cm-1 with a spatial resolution of at least 30 µm. The main applications of infrared spectroscopy, in the Earth Materials group, are the identification of the defect site of H2O in nominally anhydrous mantle minerals such as olivine and the quantification of H2O and CO2 in silicate glasses.
